Highlights

Background

Sydney Adventist Hospital (SAH), known as ‘the SAN’, is an acute-care private hospital with 360 licensed overnight beds. SAH is the largest single campus private hospital in New South Wales, providing comprehensive surgical, medical, and emergency services to over 50,000 inpatients and 175,000 outpatients each year. In 2006 SAH won the prestigious Australian Private Hospitals Association Award for Clinical Excellence.

The challenge

SAH was looking for a clinical information system (CIS) for critical care as part of their goal of becoming a digital hospital, maximising care quality and promoting learning and innovation through the use of advanced technology. Additionally, the hospital sought to eliminate incomplete, duplicate and illegible medical records, ensuring better reporting for billing.

SAH is reimbursed by health funds based on critical care certificates that are filled in every day. The hospital used paper-based certificates, and an audit revealed that SAH was missing about ~15% of reimbursement opportunities. Using paper, it was easy to miss events which could change a patient’s category status, such as a single episode of a non-invasive procedure or insertion of arterial line for just an hour. SAH wanted to capture data electronically in order to ensure that these crucial events are documented and that all potential reimbursement is received.

After working with a home-grown system, SAH felt it was important to choose a CIS which offers advanced data presentation, decision support, analysis and order management activities, resulting in improved patient safety, quality measures and overall performance in diverse critical care facilities.

The solution

SAH looked at campuses both in Australia and internationally to find the right CIS. After an extensive search they decided that MetaVision was
the best fit. At the end of 2010, SAH implemented MetaVision in their ICU and CCU. With MetaVision, the hospital generates complete, accurate and billable electronic medical records. The system’s medication management and advanced decision support tools promote the adherence to best
practices, protocols, and regulatory requirements. MetaVision streamlines reporting to the national ANZICS database as well as to the health funds responsible for the vast majority of SAH’s revenue. MetaVision is highly configurable, enabling SAH to easily and quickly tailor the system to meet their clinical and operational needs, including views customized for the needs of specialists. Unlike solutions provided by other vendors, clinicians can configure MetaVision in accordance with how they work, and incorporate new processes at any point.

SAH recognised the importance of specialised functionality for high acuity environments, and believes in a “best of breed” approach. Designed for critical care, MetaVision incorporates the expertise and experience necessary for delivering results in the ICU. MetaVision was also a compelling choice because of how well it interfaces with the medical devices and systems SAH uses from a range of vendors.

“MetaVision has made a huge difference in how we work. Legible, accurate patient files can be seen at any workstation by multiple caregivers simultaneously. The online ordering system enables specialists to access the system remotely and send messages to the staff. The coding and billing processes are much easier, and of course, getting more money back faster is a major advantage.”
