Medication management in critical care is a highly complex and demanding task that requires balancing of numerous different drugs, potential interactions, and shifting patient conditions – with no margin for error. To support clinicians in this intricate challenge, iMDsoft offers a range of medication decision support tools as add-ons to MetaVision, including plugins that meet specific regional requirements. A prime example is the MMI-CDS medication clinical decision support (CDS) plugin, designed to enhance critical care medication safety and streamline clinical workflows for hospitals in Germany.

The plugin connects to the MMI-AMTS-Service, created by Vidal MMI Germany GmbH (Vidal MMI), a leading provider of comprehensive and independently prepared drug data for doctors, clinics, nursing homes, pharmacies, authorities and healthcare companies. It was developed through close collaboration between Vidal MMI’s and iMDsoft’s development and product teams to fully leverage the specialized knowledge of both companies and ensure end-to-end compliance with medical certifications.

Optimizing critical care medication management

In critical care, where treatment plans often involve double-digit numbers of medications, there is significant potential for adverse drug interactions or dosing errors. Traditionally, clinicians must manually check for medication conflicts using reference books, dedicated mobile applications, or personal experience. This process is time-consuming and risks human error.

The MMI-CDS plugin for MetaVision digitizes the process and automates medication safety checks, supporting clinicians in Germany in making safer decisions while reducing administrative workload.

MetaVision is widely used in dozens of German hospitals, and many requested an integrated solution for medication clinical decision support. The MMI-CDS plugin meets this need by providing immediate, evidence-based recommendations, with references to the relevant research, directly within the MetaVision platform.

MMI-CDS: Automated medication management within MetaVision

The MMI-CDS plugin connects to the MMI-AMTS-Service, providing an on-premises medication management solution that checks prescribed treatments against a comprehensive database of drugs and clinical rules. The MMI-AMTS-Service identifies potential issues such as drug interactions, contraindications, and dosing errors, based on the latest research and guidelines.

How the MMI-CDS plugin works

The MMI-CDS plugin works seamlessly within MetaVision’s embedded CDS infrastructure. When a clinician creates or modifies a medication order, the system automatically validates the complete treatment plan with the MMI-AMTS-Service. It automatically checks for potential issues and if a conflict or issue is detected, MetaVision displays a warning or recommendation in the clinical workflow to ensure minimal disruption while bringing the clinician’s attention to the potential risks. There’s no need to switch between systems or manually re-enter data—everything happens in the background, enhancing efficiency without interrupting the workflow.

Depending on the local policy and the severity of the issue identified via the MMI-AMTS-Service, the user can be requested to provide acknowledgement or reasons for completing the action. This is also done behind the scenes within the MetaVision system.

Essential critical care medication safety checks

The MMI-CDS supports the medication safety checks that are essential for clinical decision support in critical care. For example, daily dose max/min check, dose adjustment in renal insufficiency, drug interaction and PRISCUS check, among others

The various checks can be configured to be active or inactive per department and with different acknowledgment policies to ensure that the right user gets the right warning at the right time, while eliminating unnecessary steps that can cause click fatigue.

Key benefits of the MMI-CDS plugin

Improved patient safety: The MMI-CDS plugin enhances medication safety and supports more efficient clinical workflows. By automating medication safety checks, it helps clinicians avoid medication errors and adverse drug events.

Faster and easier medication planning: Clinicians receive evidence-based recommendations directly within MetaVision, reducing the need to manually consult reference materials or rely on memory. This not only saves time but also reduces cognitive load, allowing clinicians to focus more on patient care.

Updated knowledge: Additionally, because the MMI-AMTS-Service database is regularly updated with the latest research and guidelines, the recommendations clinicians receive reflect the latest research and evolving best practices.

Easy to adopt and deploy

Implementing the MMI-CDS plugin is straightforward, requiring just the plugin and the MMI-AMTS-Service. Many German hospitals already have the MMI-AMTS Service installed, and if they do not, the local iMDsoft team can assist with adding it.

Patient data stays within MetaVision

The MMI-CDS plugin operates entirely within the MetaVision environment. No patient data is stored or processed externally, and no identifying patient details are communicated between the systems. This approach ensures that patient data remains secure and compliant with Germany’s strict data privacy regulations.

“With MetaVision’s strengths in critical care and its popularity in Germany, we are excited to extend the reach of MMI-AMTS-Service. This will enable us to support more hospitals and clinicians and enhance medication safety,” said Benjamin Kühn, Product Management for Drug Therapy Safety (AMTS) at Vidal MMI. “This collaboration allows us to integrate the best features of both systems, improving patient care in critical settings and boosting clinician efficiency.”

Conclusion: Enhancing medication safety in critical care

With the introduction of the MetaVision MMI-CDS plugin, iMDsoft raises the standard for critical care medication safety in German hospitals. By automating complex medication checks, the plugin reduces the risk of medication errors, enhances clinician efficiency, and ensures compliance with the latest medical research. For clinicians, the ability to rely on immediate, evidence-based recommendations means more freedom to focus on what matters most—caring for patients.
