About Jönköping county council

Jönköping county council is a regional health authority in southern Sweden made up of three hospitals serving 330,000 residents. The council has a proven track record of successful innovations in healthcare, and is committed to improving clinical performance while reducing unnecessary cost. In a ranking of 101 indicators among 21 healthcare systems in Sweden, Jönköping had the highest performance, and the council has received the Swedish Quality Award four times. In 2013, 2014 & 2015, Ryhov hospital of Jönköping was chosen as the best mid-size hospital in Sweden by the leading healthcare magazine Dagens Medicin.

The challenge

The council sought a high acuity clinical information system (CIS) to help standardise care across the region and that could embed care plans, regulatory requiremetns and best practices. System flexibility was essential in order to customise the CIS in accordance with the council’s needs. It was also important that the system could be modified easily after the initial implementation to accommodate changing requirements over time.

The solution

After an extensive evaluation of available solutions, the council concluded that MetaVision was the best fit for their requirements. iMDsoft and three other vendors answered 48 test cases, and MetaVision achieved the highest score in 81% of the cases. The multi-site project was completed successfully in March 2012, with MetaVision implemented across the ICUs, pre-op units, ORs and PACUs at Ryhov County Hospital, Highland Hospital of Eksjö, and Värnamo Hospital.

The council now has complete and accurate electronic medical records throughout the region’s perioperative and critical care environments. MetaVision automatically collects and displays patient information every minute, and offers advanced decision support and medication management.

The results

MetaVision has improved the level of documentation at Jönköping county council. The system is used for clinical reminders, helping promote patient safety issues such as prevention of infection and pressure injuries.

Data continuity across high acuity environments

Patients now have a single patient file throughout their stay in the critical care and perioperative units for all three hospitals in Jönköping. Staff has full access to all the information in the patient file, including previous treatments at other hospitals and departments. Handovers between the ICU and the OR are smoother, and orders are carried from one department to the next.

Centralised system across the county

MetaVision’s unique architecture enabled efficient deployment across all three sites in Jönköping, promoting uniform clinical workflows and care plans and enforcing clinical best practices and protocols. Changes are centrally implemented in the system, increasing the speed and rate of compliance with regulatory reporting requirements.

Rich database for performance analysis, benchmarking, and research

The data provided by the three hospitals creates a rich database that can be used to identify ideas for clinical, financial and operational improvements. Benchmarking can be established for each of the hospitals in the group, providing valuable information for quality programs and related incentive plans. Clinicians can produce large scale academic research.
